Life can throw challenges our way that seem too big, too lonely, or too impossible. As a psychologist, I’ve seen how resilient people can be. I admire my client’s strength. Through the humbling experience of learning from my clients, I have come to realise one thing. We don’t only survive; we emerge stronger and more authentic from many of our experiences.
A Philosophy of Growth Through Adversity
The Japanese art of Kintsugi—repairing broken pottery with gold—reflects my view on healing. Could it be we are all a bit “broken” yet there’s beauty and strength in our flaws? Our struggles and wounds can become sources of strength when we acknowledge them instead of hiding away.
Wellbeing isn’t about having a perfect life. It’s about finding the tools and insights to tackle life’s challenges with awareness and purpose.
Common Life Challenges I Work With
In my practice, every experience is different. However, many people face similar challenges that impact their lives and relationships.
Anxiety: When Worry Takes Control
Anxiety shows up in several ways. It may cause constant worrying or overthinking. You may also experience physical symptoms or feel the urge to avoid certain situations. Understanding that anxiety is a normal response is the first step to regaining peace of mind.
Depression: Navigating the Darkness
Depression often feels like being trapped in a fog where nothing seems worthwhile. But with the proper support, you can rediscover meaning and hope—even when it seems impossible.
Relationship Challenges: Connection and Conflict
Whether it’s issues in marriage, family, work, or friendships, relationship challenges affect every part of our lives. Learning to communicate openly while setting boundaries is both an art and a skill.
My Approach
My therapy style combines evidence-based methods with a practical outlook. I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT helps my clients run towards, not away from, tough feelings. Yup, running towards tough feelings.
I also use Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT). EFT examines how we experience, label, and organise tough feelings. I have many smart clients who live behind intellectual defences. How do we navigate these high walls? Let’s do this together. I can assess how much change you are ready for, work out your goals and go from there. You will find me to be gentle, yet no-nonsense (in a kind, respectful way). Experiencing feelings in a safe space with me helps my clients. They get to process intense feelings and side-step misplaced guilt or shame.
I am also a big fan and student of Coaching Psychology. Coaching Psychology is less “Tony Robbins” to me, and more Dr. Tony Grant (a late and wonderful Psychologist who Made Australia Happy). Coaching Psychology looks at evidence-based ways to acknowledge and build your strengths. I like this approach, as only asking “What’s wrong with you”, and not “What’s right with you” is a bit limited in my view!
If and when you partner with me, where do we start? I have a few approaches, which can be refined with you when I get to know you:
- Building your self-awareness and being the “mirror” for what you are likely to be like on “good days” and “bad days”.
- Exploring and developing effective resilience and coping strategies. I have had my share of “dark nights of the soul” and have worked under incredible pressure, and I bring this to the table.
- Navigate life changes and important decisions.
- Enhance relationships through effective communication and clear boundaries.
- Find meaning and direction during tough times.
